Director of Finance – Managed Care
Lead Financial Strategy for a Complex, Risk-Based Managed Care Portfolio
We are seeking a hands-on, experienced Director of Finance – Managed Care to join a high-impact healthcare finance leadership team. This role is designed for a finance leader with deep, direct experience in managed care, HMO, and/or Medicaid environments who can immediately assume financial ownership of a $180M managed care portfolio.
The Director of Finance will partner closely with the VP of Finance to drive both day-to-day financial operations and long-term managed care strategy, with clear visibility and preparation for future promotion to VP of Finance. This is not a general healthcare finance role—it requires demonstrated expertise navigating the unique economics, regulatory requirements, and risk structures of managed care.
Key Responsibilities
Managed Care Financial Leadership (Primary Focus)
- Serve as the finance leader for managed care operations, with accountability for financial performance across HMO and/or Medicaid lines of business
- Lead financial oversight of risk-based and capitated reimbursement models, including PMPM analysis, medical cost trends, and margin optimization
- Own financial modeling for rate-setting, contract performance, and payor negotiations
- Analyze utilization, medical expense drivers, and administrative cost structures to inform pricing and strategic decisions
- Ensure financial compliance with managed care and Medicaid regulatory requirements
Strategic & Operational Finance
- Partner closely with the VP of Finance on all financial matters impacting managed care operations and growth initiatives
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning for the managed care portfolio
- Deliver insight-driven financial analysis to support executive decision-making and strategic planning
- Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for senior leadership
Leadership & Team Development
- Manage and mentor a lean, high-performing two-person finance leadership team
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and execution-oriented team culture
- Operate as a trusted thought partner within a small, senior leadership group
Required Experience & Qualifications
Managed Care Experience (Required)
- 10+ years of progressive finance or accounting experience, with a significant portion spent in managed care, health plan, HMO, and/or Medicaid environments
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience with:
- Capitation and risk-based reimbursement models
- Medical cost trend analysis
- Managed care contract and rate modeling
- Financial performance of Medicaid and/or HMO products
- Applications without direct managed care finance experience will not be considered
Leadership & Technical Skills
- 5+ years of people leadership experience
- Strong background in healthcare finance within regulated environments
- Advanced Excel modeling and financial analytics expertise
- Proven ability to operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and influence senior stakeholders
Preferred Background
- Public accounting and/or corporate healthcare finance experience
- Experience supporting growth, scale, or increased financial complexity in managed care organizations
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (required)
- CPA and/or Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, MS Finance) strongly preferred
