Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller

Location: NW Washington, DC (Hybrid: 2–3 days onsite)
Employment Type: Temp-to-Hire
Pay Rate: $50–$55/hr (Salary: $100,000–$110,000)

A growing consulting/lobbying organization in Washington, DC is seeking a strong Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller to join its Operations and Finance team. This position will serve as the #2 in the accounting department, reporting directly to the Senior Finance Director. The company is transitioning work from outsourced partners back in-house, so this role is ideal for someone who enjoys building processes, improving workflows, and taking ownership.

Strong Sage Intacct experience is required (including dashboards and custom reporting). Experience with Concur, Salesforce, and Paylocity is a plus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and balance accurate ledgers; reconcile activity with the general ledger.
  • Download, integrate, and reconcile accounting data across multiple systems (vendor invoices, credit card transactions, bank deposits, intercompany activity, and more).
  • Develop a deep understanding of how each financial and operational tech platform connects; troubleshoot system or data integration issues.
  • Support team members across the Operations and Finance function as needed.
  • Manage invoicing and collection of accounts receivable.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and reports.
  • Assist in preparing budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow insights.
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Provide documentation for audits, compliance reviews, and internal inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
  • 5+ years of accounting or finance experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and core accounting practices.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct is mandatory, including dashboards, reporting, and system navigation.
  • Experience with Concur, Salesforce, and Paylocity is a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and reconciliation skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, evolving environment.
