Accounting Manager – Affordable Housing / Real Estate

Cherry Bekaert is partnered with a mission‑driven affordable housing organization that operates with the sophistication and scale of a for‑profit real estate firm. Due to continued growth, the organization is seeking an Accounting Manager to support and elevate its real estate and corporate accounting function.

This role will serve as a key partner to the Controller and plays a critical role in overseeing accounting operations across a large multifamily housing portfolio.

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager will oversee financial operations for a portfolio of affordable and mixed‑income housing communities, working closely with internal leadership and third‑party property managers. This is a hands‑on role with visibility, ownership, and long‑term growth potential (including progression toward Assistant Controller).

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for real estate entities
• Review and analyze financials received from third‑party property managers
• Manage audits across a large multifamily housing portfolio
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, LIHTC, HUD, lender, and grantor requirements
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and consolidated reporting
• Supervise and mentor accounting resources (internal and/or outsourced)
• Drive process improvements and strengthen controls and reporting accuracy
• Assist with onboarding new properties and integrating them into accounting systems

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 7+ years of accounting experience, including manager‑level responsibility
• Strong background in affordable housing, nonprofit real estate, or LIHTC environments
• Experience working with third‑party property managers
• Solid knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting
• CPA preferred (or strong public accounting foundation)
• Experience with systems such as Yardi, MIP, or similar
• Comfortable in a hybrid, fast‑paced, and mission‑oriented organization
