Staff / Senior Accountant

Arlington, VA

Location: Arlington, VA (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)
Pay Rate: $40/hour (Temp) | $75,000–$80,000 annual salary (FTE, DOE)
Employment Type: Temp-to-Hire

Position Overview

Reporting to the Controller, the Staff/Senior Accountant is responsible for a broad range of accounting and financial support functions. This role supports day-to-day accounting operations, month- and year-end close, reconciliations, and compliance activities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and collaborative, with strong technical accounting skills and experience working in a fast-paced, hybrid environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Process accounts payable and maintain accurate vendor records and documentation
  • Record and review credit card transactions, ensuring completeness and proper support
  • Assist with recording revenue and accounts receivable transactions
  • Deposit and accurately record paper checks in a timely manner
  • Prepare and post daily, monthly, and adjusting journal entries
  • Perform detailed and complex financial analyses as requested
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including AP, AR, prepaids, fixed assets, and other key accounts
  • Communicate with vendors regarding payment issues, credits, and discrepancies
  • Collaborate with internal departments to resolve revenue and receivable inquiries
  • Support month-end and year-end close, including audit schedules and IRS Form 990 preparation
  • Maintain organized digital records to ensure audit readiness
  • Prepare year-end vendor tax documents (e.g., 1099s)
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and financial controls
  • Assist with implementing and improving internal controls, systems, and workflows
  • Support system enhancements, data cleanup initiatives, and special projects
  • Perform ad hoc reporting and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and audit support strongly preferred
  • Nonprofit or association experience preferred but not required
  • Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct (required) and Bill.com (required)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Customer-service mindset when working with internal and external stakeholders
