About the Opportunity A well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join its finance team on a temp-to-hire basis. This role reports to the Accounting Director and will play a key role in supporting core accounting operations, compliance, and financial reporting. Key Responsibilities
Perform general accounting functions supporting month-end and year-end close
Prepare schedules and journal entries for review by senior leadership
Develop and maintain multiple cost allocation schedules on a monthly basis
Process Accounts Payable, including review, coding, documentation, and timely payments
Coordinate with internal staff, vendors, and banking partners in a professional manner
Track and manage international wire transfers as needed
Ensure adherence to established accounting procedures and internal controls
Maintain compliance with applicable sponsoring agency and grant regulations
Assist with audit preparation, including annual financial audits and programmatic audits
Support preparation of Form 990 and related filings
Assist with accounting research and special projects as requested
Serve as backup for various accounting functions when needed
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent relevant experience
Strong experience with QuickBooks Online or a similar accounting system
Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel
Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, and compliance requirements
Experience supporting month-end close and general ledger activities
Eligibility to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship available)
Ability and willingness to work onsite in a hybrid environment
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience with grant-funded accounting
Understanding of Uniform Guidance
Exposure to foreign currency transactions and international payments
Experience with accounts payable automation tools (e.g., Anybill or similar)
Prior experience supporting audits and Form 990 preparation
