Cordia Resources by Cherry Bekaert is partnered with a top construction firm who is seeking a Controller-Level candidate to join their team on a contract-to-hire basis. This role is ideal for an individual with a strong background in multi-entity accounting and a passion for improving financial processes. Position: Assistant Controller/Controller
Type: Temp-to-Hire
Location: On-site in Reston, VA (3 days per week)
Salary: $115,000-$140,000 + Bonus
Preference: CPA designation heavily preferred

Key Responsibilities:

  • Suggest improvements for internal controls and financial processes.
  • Maintain and track debt sheets, equipment sales, and contracts.
  • Assist with new accounting system implementation and staff training.
  • Set up employee loans and payment schedules.
  • Document departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate credit card expense tracking and monitor reconciliations.
  • Conduct monthly reviews and reconciliations for balance sheets and income statements.
  • Maintain various financial schedules and records.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries and conduct quarterly and annual closeouts.
  • Assist with CAM collection tracking for real estate entities.
  • Backup AR/AP functions as needed and train staff.
  • Perform ad-hoc reporting and analysis.
  • Assist with filing personal property tax returns.
  • Support yearly financial review and tax preparation with accounting firm.
  • Track R&D tax credits and conduct annual 1099 filings.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of general ledger accounting experience in a private/corporate setting within a multi-entity environment or 3+ years in an assistant controller/controller role for a mid-size business.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Certifications: CPA designation is heavily preferred.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in construction or commercial real estate accounting preferred.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with QuickBooks desktop, Yardi, Sage Intacct, or specialized construction software (such as Deltek, CMiC, Foundation, ProCore).

  • Multi-Entity Experience: Must have experience with multi-company environments in relation to accounting software, email accounts, and shared folders.
