Project Accountant - (Remote)
About the Role
A growing real estate development and investment firm is seeking a Project Accountant to support its expanding portfolio of multifamily development and construction projects. This role blends traditional accounting responsibilities with exposure to development finance and investment modeling.
Reporting directly to the Controller, this position offers high visibility, career growth potential, and the opportunity to make a direct impact on the success of the platform. The role is primarily remote, with required monthly travel to Central Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting & Reporting
- Record and reconcile project costs, invoices, and vendor payments.
- Prepare monthly journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses.
- Assist with construction draw requests and lender compliance.
- Maintain and update project budget schedules.
- Support year-end audit processes and financial statement preparation.
Development Finance Support
- Assist with capital forecasts and investor reporting.
- Maintain promote/participation schedules.
- Collaborate on financial models for active and pipeline projects.
- Participate in ad hoc analyses related to financing and partnership accounting.
Process & Controls
- Help refine accounting policies and procedures in line with GAAP.
- Ensure compliance during construction, lease-up, and operations.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure data accuracy.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2–5 years of relevant experience (real estate development, construction, or public accounting preferred).
- Proficiency in Excel modeling; ability to manage cash flow and capital models.
- Experience with Sage 300 CRE is a plus.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and construction/development accounting.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
