The VP of Finance & Controller will be involved in all aspects of the financial operations of the managed funds, the management companies along with the general operations of the business. He/she will report directly to the Managing Partner and will be expected to work closely with the investment professionals, administrative staff and third-party vendors.
 
This position will be headquartered out of the Maryland office. 
 
Overview & Position Breakdown
 
Fund Accounting
  • Coordinate the quarterly and semi-annual valuation processes for the funds’ investments
  • Work closely with the outsourced bookkeepers to manage the quarterly and annual accounting and financial reporting of the funds
  • Prepare quarterly partner capital account statements through CRM system
  • Assist with annual audit and tax return preparation with external accounting firms. Serve as the liaison between the investment teams and external auditors during the audits
  • Manage the quarterly investor reporting process, working with the investment professionals and Managing Partner
  • Maintain internal fund quarterly IRR worksheets
  • Ensure that all investor and other reporting obligations are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with the funds’ partnership agreement and other applicable agreements
  • Prepare capital call and distribution notices and calculations
  • Preparation of quarterly management fee calculations
  • Manage borrowings, compliance, and reporting for Credit Facility
  • Work with outsourced bookkeeper to make all required SBA filings
  • Oversee the preparation of periodic bank and cash reconciliations
  • Respond to limited partner inquiries and information requests
  • Assist with Investor Relations related activities
  • Work with the investment teams and fund counsel to prepare offering memorandums and legal documents related to new fundraising
  • Manage the bank account opening process for new funds
  • Complete special projects upon request
Management Company
  • Management company accounting, reporting and budgeting
  • Monitor and manage the company cash flow
  • Review and approve employee expenses to ensure their appropriate allocation and documentation
  • Process monthly payroll
  • Manage intercompany / related party transactions
  • Review, process, and pay, via check or wire, vendor invoices, and employee expense reports ensuring documentation and approvals are received and that transactions have been coded and accounted for properly
  • Review and assist with the annual 1099 process
  • Help lead HR, Insurance, IT and office strategy
Compliance
  • Support Managing Partner and outsourced compliance firm to administer and enforce compliance program
  • Assist with maintaining proper documentation and records
  • Prepare information and assist with annual and ad-hoc regulatory filings
Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant required
  • BS/BA in Accounting or Finance
  • 8+ years’ experience in private equity, VC or alternative investments industry required
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Unquestionable business ethics and integrity
  • Strong internal motivation (proactive thinker and a “self-starter”)
  • Superior organizational and time management skills, along with the ability to perform under pressure or against tight deadlines and competing priorities
  • QuickBooks online experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • General knowledge of accounting procedures and principles
  • Ability to read and understand legal documents, such as Limited Partnership Agreements
