Controller/Director of Finance 
Company Overview:
Headquartered in suburban MD with operations in Georgia and Texas, our client is an active, growing $40m PE-backed Cyber, Intelligence and Systems & Software firm, with a core focus on governmental clients.  Entering into new phases of growth, they are actively seeking an entrepreneurial and hands-on Controller/Director of Finance to support these plans and help build out the group.
Position Overview:
The Director of Finance will be a key management team member and lead the five (5) person finance department and will be responsible for all of our client’s financial and accounting activities as well as certain related aspects of contract administration and project control. Key specific responsibilities include financial statement generation, financial audit preparation and execution, tax preparation, annual budgeting and forecasting, generation and analyzing KPI reports, contract review and operation, and development of materials for the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, build out and mentor accounting and finance team staff to maximize personal and professional growth and to build a deep and broad department
  • Generate annual/monthly/weekly and contract/project level financial statements and reports for the Management team, the Board, and Project Managers
  • Review, and approve customer invoices to ensure accurate and timely submission
  • Active management of working capital and cash
  • Develop and generate weekly, monthly and annual KPI reports for all stakeholders
  • Develop and update annual budgets and track performance/variance of actuals vs. budgets
  • Direct the annual financial audit and tax preparation and submission
  • Prepare all government filings and agency reports such as DCAA audits, Incurred Cost Submissions, Provisional Billing Rates, etc.)
  • Oversee integration and transition to Unanet ERP and build out reporting capability
  • Work in cross-functional teams to drive departmental and company-wide process and performance improvements
  • Provide real-time and accurate financial information to support existing contract management, new business development, and contract recompete processes
  • Oversee payroll submissions and periodic testing of employee time sheets
  • Prepare and deliver Board and investor reports and meeting materials
  • Prepare required bank reporting, to include Borrowing Base calculation
Position Preferences & Requirements:
  • BS/BA in Accounting or Finance required.
  • MBA/MST in Accounting or Finance preferred
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Fifteen years’ experience in financial management, at least five years recent government contracting experience
  • Government contracting experience with Defense or Intelligence customers
  • Government contracting ERP system experience, preferably with Unanet
  • Security clearance preferred, but not required.  However, the candidate should be eligible to obtain a security clearance.

  • Understand government contract documents and processes and the ability to accurately account for all contract elements.  Includes fluency with billing rates, contract modifications, funding obligations, and contract closeouts
  • Ability to build dynamic financial and operational models and forecasts (e.g., multi-week cash flow and liquidity forecasting)
  • Manage working capital efficiently and proactively to drive optimal cash management and ensure timely invoicing dynamics with both customers and vendors
  • Significant Unanet, or comparable ERP (i.e., Deltek-Costpoint), experience and knowledge
  • Strong GAAP and tax accounting knowledge
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience presenting to investors, the Board of Directors, financing partners, customers and other stakeholders
  • Continuous improvement mindset that promotes process improvement
  • Team oriented with significant experience working with internal operational / production groups
