A growing, privately-held retail property owner and manager of approximately 2 million square feet of retail/shopping centers in the DC metro area is seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Property Accountant to join our team. This individual will work with the Controller.  You will be responsible for full accounting and reporting functions of a real estate portfolio of commercial retail space with approximately 250 tenants.  Solid accounting, communication and organizational skills are required.  This position will work a hybrid schedule in Vienna, VA.

 
Property Accountant Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Prepare monthly bank statement reconciliations
  • Review payables postings and compare to budget to ensure accuracy of accounting in the general ledger 
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts to ensure proper coding of revenue and expenses
  • Process loan payments, insurance premiums and real estate tax payments to ensure timely payments and avoid late fees/penalties
  • Responsible for cash management and internal bank transfers for property operating and reserve cash accounts
  • Prepare and post journal entries for recurring and non-recurring transactions
  • Assist Property Managers with preparation and/or review of budget variance reports
  • Reconcile balance sheet items to include due to/from accounts with subsidiary ledgers, accounts payable and accounts receivable with other appropriate substantiating documents
  • Process and review monthly management, leasing and asset management fee calculations
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Prepare schedules for management and external auditors for all assigned properties to assist with tax return preparation
  • Respond to inquiries from CPAs and property management personnel regarding financial statements
  • Record appropriate depreciation and amortization of fixed assets, tenant improvements and leasing commissions
  • Support lease administration with preparation of annual operating expense, CAM and RE tax reconciliations
  • Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and reforecasts
Education and/or Experience:
  • 3-5 years commercial real estate accounting experience 
  • Understanding of cash and accrual basis accounting in accordance with GAAP
  • Retail property management accounting experience is a plus
  • Yardi Voyager or similar property management software experience is required
  • Strong analytical and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Experience and understanding of inter-company transactions
  • Strong time management, attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines under pressure while maintaining a positive can-do attitude 
  • Ability to work independently and with a team with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness
  • Solid computer skills with high level of competency with Microsoft Windows, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Accounting software in general as well as a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Strong communication skills; must be effective communicator with all levels of employees, including senior management
  • Knowledge of financial statement analysis and financial modeling.
