Our client, a privately held high growth Biotechnology firm is seeking it’s next Controller to continue leading the charge for this exceptional growth story company.  This position manages 5 direct reports, and is in charge of the General Ledger, Financial Reporting, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions. In addition, this key executive will provide information to, and actively participate/collaborate on activities with the following Finance functions: International Finance, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Tax Compliance.  Fantastic benefits, awesome collaborative accounting team, and a client we have made many placements with.

Overview of Company and Position information:
  • Very cohesive Accounting/Finance team of about 18.  5 direct reports. They seem to like each other and work well together.
  • 700+ employees including overseas
  • They use JD Edwards which is a big bonus to have.
  • CPA very strongly preferred
  • 5 days in office is preferred, but one day can be remote if needed.
  • Reports into a great leader- very nice demeanor.
  • Company is doing great-growing YOY ~30%.  Hardly any slowdown due to Covid.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Controller is directly responsible for leading the General Ledger, Financial Reporting, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions. Additionally, this key executive will provide information to, and actively participate/collaborate on activities with the following Finance functions: International Finance, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Tax Compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Oversee month-end and year-end financial close processes.
  • Implement and provide executives with guidance on technical accounting changes.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of various balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Oversee the General Ledger and Chart of Accounts.
  • Prepare Annual US GAAP financial statements.
  • Manage the annual audit process and lead interactions with auditors.
  • Direct the Company’s accounting policies and procedures. Implement changes to existing processes and procedures as necessary.
  • Leverage the existing ERP, general ledger, and other financial software tools in combination with implementation of new policies, processes and procedures, to achieve industry standards and/or best practices to increase efficiency and facilitate growth.
  • Maintain fiscal records and internal controls.
  • Develop and produce reporting packages on the overall company, business segments, revenues, expenses, and balance sheet accounts as needed by the Executive management team.
  • Review financial reports with various business/functional leaders and the Executive management team.
  • Manage and monitor daily cash flows.
  • Support the preparation of reporting for banks, vendors, and financing partners.
  • Support other Finance functions in regular and ad-hoc basis: International Finance, FP&A, Tax, Legal/Governance, and Human Resources.
 


EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited US institution required
  • Active CPA license required
  • Big 4 (or equivalent) experience required
  • Ten years of professional experience with responsibility for all facets of accounting
  • Five years of management experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 
  • Strong knowledge of accounting fundamentals to include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to document and adhere to accounting policies and procedures. Knowledge of government accounting standards a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to gather and evaluate complex data and information and develop a recommendation and plan of action.
  • Proficient in working with accounting systems. Experience in designing and implementing system enhancements and process improvements.
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), particularly JDEdwards preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results.
  • Attention to detail with demonstrated commitment to excellence and performance.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time-sensitive deadlines and deliverables.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems for the department and implement solutions that entails cross- functional coordination.
  • Ability to build/foster relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to organize, present, and articulate ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform ad hoc reporting and other tasks as needed in a demanding financial environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to provide day-to-day leadership and technical knowledge and develop processes and procedures to align with business goals.
  • Ability to provide guidance and develop staff; able to recognize and develop leaders and SMEs and provide career development opportunities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is frequently required to sit and stand for long periods. The individual is occasionally required to walk; use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
