Job Title: Assistant Controller, Real Estate Accounting
Location: Bethesda, Columbia, or Baltimore, MD (Hybrid – 1-2 days per week in-office)



Job Summary:
A real estate nonprofit organization is seeking an Assistant Controller to support accounting operations for its development, asset management, and property management functions. This role will focus on consolidations and multi-entity accounting and reports to the Controller.


Responsibilities:
  • Maintain books and records for multiple entities
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Coordinate with external auditors
  • Prepare schedules for tax filings
  • Support accounting for real estate transactions (pre-development, acquisitions, dispositions, consolidations)
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
  • Manage intercompany accounting and reconciliations
  • Mentor junior accounting staff
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls
  • Assist with accounting policy updates and process improvements

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred
  • 5-7 years of accounting/finance experience (3+ years considered for strong candidates)
  • Experience with multi-entity consolidations and GAAP
  • Public accounting and real estate/partnership accounting experience preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills required, Workday experience a plus
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
