Non-profit Staff Accountant 16202299

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our team in Washington, DC.  In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for a variety of financial tasks, including cash management, journal entries, reconciliation, and invoice preparation. Your exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail will ensure accurate financial reporting and support the smooth functioning of our finance department.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare daily cash reports and communicate relevant information to stakeholders.
  • Generate and enter journal entries for cash receipts, ZBA transfers, returned checks, line of credits, and loan payments.
  • Handle weekly deposits of checks, cash, rent payments, BER/invoice payments, and various donations received at the main office.
  • Process credit card donations and maintain accurate records.
  • Reconcile operating and payroll bank accounts, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Maintain fixed assets schedule and track depreciation.
  • Perform reconciliation of benefits accounts, such as HSA and flexible spending.
  • Prepare invoices accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide assistance to the Assistant Controller in managing functional expenses.
  • Update the daily cash receipt log to ensure accurate tracking of transactions.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of various databases, balance sheets, income and expense accounts, and bank statements.
  • Manage fixed assets listing on an ongoing basis.
  • Facilitate electronic fund transfers from donors.
  • Prepare all types of invoices, including event sponsorships.
  • Coordinate deposits sent to the caging facility.
  • Complete semi-monthly journal entries to adjust financial accounts as necessary.
  • Support external audit staff during year-end audits by providing schedules and relevant documentation.
  • Undertake additional tasks and specific projects as assigned to support the Assistant Controller and Senior Accountant - Accounts Receivable.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in financial operations, accounting, or a similar role.
  • Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is preferred.
  • Prior experience with nonprofit organizations or in a similar industry is a plus.
